Chalerm undecided on censure role

Posted by arnon_k On March - 3 - 2011

Puea Thai MPs chairman Chalerm Yubamrung is still undecided whether to take part in the censure debate scheduled for March 9-12.

The debate will be led by Puea Thai party list MP Mingkwan Sangsuwan, who said he would ask Mr Chalerm to be part of his team to grill Prime Minister Abhisit, Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban and eight other ministers.

Mr Chalerm said if he were to speak it would be with a heavy heart because he had given all the information he had to other MPs he thought would be in Mr Mingkwan’s team.

The veteran MP said he has a different way of thinking and working than Mr Mingkwan. More importantly, he did not know what Mr Mingkwan had assigned each of his team members to do.

Mr Chalerm said he would sit and listen during the first three days of the debate, starting on March 9. He would consider taking the floor on March 12 only only if other speakers had missed something seriously important.

It was his intention from the beginning to give Mr Mingkwan a chance to show his ability. Therefore, he could not yet sayl if he would join in the debate, Mr Chalerm said.

“Moreover, I personally disagree with the debate extending over four days. That is too long.

“This would not put the opposition at an advantage. Four days without making any hard-hitting blow would only annoy and confuse the people and give the government the upper hand.

“True, Mr Mingkwan asked be to join the debate, but he has never asked for my advice or made friends with me. How could I agree to do that right away?” Mr Chalerm said.

The veteran MP said there was no conflict between him and Mr Mingkwan because he had never yearned to be prime minister or a Puea Thai MP.

Mr Chalerm also said he disagreed with including Mr Suthep on the censure list.

He said Mr Suthep was too experienced in political games in parliament to be easily knocked out.

“It’s better to lock him up in hand-cuffs, and left untouched,” Mr Chalerm said, adding that the Democrats were always the champs in parliament in terms of oratory.
